I visited this interesting cafe called Pie Man in Hwajeong the other day. My friend wanted to try their savory pie and I was interested to see what they had in the way of sweet ones.
Now as a New Zealander pies are very important to me. A good mince and cheese pie is probably one of my favorite things to eat. These were more of what we would call a tart. I’m still on the hunt for a good Kiwi (or Aussie) type pie.
The shop is a small one and they have limited seating. There were a few people when we arrived and it continued to be busy while we were there with most of the tables being full by the time we left. It was not early either but I guess many people has the same idea as we did and came in after dinner. They did also have take out boxes so a few people that came in were just getting their pies to go.
The pies all look wonderful and it was hard to choose. The make some beautiful looking pies of all different flavors both savory and sweet although there are more sweet ones. I wanted to get the one that I saw on their Instagram that had a cat’s head decoration on it but it must have been sold out as I didn’t see it there. Eventually we choose the meat pie, a lemon one that looked pretty and a chocolate one because it’s always a safe bet. You can’t go wrong with chocolate right?
The prices were reasonable with most of the pies priced between 3,000 to 5,000 won.
The savory meat pie was a tomato, bacon mixture with jalapeno peppers. It had the peppers on top so I knew it would be spicy. I did try a small bite anyway just to see what it was like. It was actually quite tasty despite the hotness. Usually I find that the spice overtakes the flavor for me but I could still tell that this had a good taste.
The highlight of the of the pies we tried was hands-down the lemon pie. I was not expecting much and to be honest I just got it because it looked nice. However both my friend and I thought it was delicious, very light and lemony and not too sweet. It was very similar to and tasted like a lemon meringue pie. I would definitely get this one again.
The chocolate pie which I had high hopes for was not all that great. I thought it was too dense especially after eating the nice light lemon one. It was chocolaty and it wasn’t terrible or anything although I think it may have been easier to eat with a drink. Maybe some plain milk to help cut the sweetness. It was quite rich along with that denseness.
They don’t have much in the way of drinks. They only had one Iced Chocolate which was made with a bitter chocolate and I prefer sweet. The other one they had was actually a milk tea with chocolate in it.
My friend got the milk tea chocolate and she quite liked it. I tried it and as I don’t like tea I was not a fan. It comes in a little bottle with a cup so you can pour it out yourself and share it too of course. This was a nice touch and it means that you can pour it into the iced cup whenever you are ready. They did have some water in a water cooler available so I just drank water this time round.
